Real Madrid's slim Spanish title hopes were dealt a blow when Ronaldo missed a last-minute penalty in Saturday night's 0-0 draw at Valencia. Both sides were keen to close the gap on leaders Barcelona.
Ronaldo, who has been criticised over his fitness and commitment to Real, was left out of the starting line-up for the second league game running. The Brazilian came on with 28 minutes left but fired a weak spot-kick straight at Santiago Canizarez after being brought down by the Valencia keeper.
After the game Ronaldo, who recently criticised the Real fans and has been outspoken in his support for outgoing president Florentino Perez, revealed he is going through a difficult time. "Things aren't going well at the moment but I can only get out of this situation with enthusiasm and hard work," he said.
Real went into the game on the back of Wednesday's Champions League exit at Arsenal and without two key players in David Beckham and Roberto Carlos. England skipper Beckham suffered a groin injury at Highbury, while left-back Carlos was suspended.
